His Role With the Maple Leafs
Gregor was a fourth line forward for the Maple Leafs last season. He played in 63 games, scoring six goals and 12 points. He was a healthy scratch at times as well. When he did play, he averaged 11:24 time on ice per game. He played just over one minute per game on the penalty kill. He was third among Maple Leaf forwards with 147 hits, which translates to over 12 hits per 60 minutes. His most common linemates were David Kampf, Ryan Reaves and Bobby McMann.
His Style of Play
Gregor plays a game predicated on speed and physicality. He knows that if he wants to keep his spot in the lineup every game, he better finish his checks. His speed allows him to play on the penalty kill and occasionally create chances shorthanded. Despite the hit total, he’s not seen as an intimidating player to play against. And despite his speed, he does not create a ton of offense as either a playmaker or a goal scorer. Consistency has been a problem for Gregor. He needs to play to his strengths and exude an all out effort type of approach to be an every game player going forward.
His Role With the Senators
Gregor is likely to take over Parker Kelly’s role. Kelly played just under 12 minutes per game last season, scoring eight goals and 18 points. He killed penalties and finished second among Senators forwards in hits. Gregor’s speed and commitment to finish his checks make him a solid fourth line option. In order to keep that spot, he’ll need to produce some goals and points, though, and show that he can be relied on for 10-12 hard minutes every game.
Bottom Line
Gregor is coming in on a low money, one year deal. He’ll be one of the lowest paid players on the team, so no one should expect a big role for Gregor. Having said that, Senators fans are well aware of how much depth matters. It seems like the lack of solid bottom six players has plagued this team for quite some time. Gregor also knows how important this season is for him. In an ideal world, Gregor can earn trust from the coaching staff, show himself to be a solid fourth line player, and earn a new contract.
