Just two weeks ago, the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals played a 1-0 overtime game where neither team could buy a goal. That certainly wasn’t the case tonight. Thomas Chabot scored the ninth goal of the game as the Senators took down the Capitals 5-4 in overtime! Let’s dive into the details on the Senators third win in a row.

Wild Special Teams

The special teams battle came in twos: two power play goals for the Sens, two for the Caps, two shorthanded goals for the Sens, and two shorthanded penalty shots for Ottawa as well. Norris scored on his while Pinto did not. Neither team will be happy with their undisciplined play. The worst of it for the Capitals was the back-to-back two many men penalties in the first. For the Sens, Ridly Greig’s careless high sticking penalty part way through the third was ill-timed, leading to yet another Alex Ovechkin power play goal.

Norris and Pinto Dominance

Both these players were phenomenal tonight. Norris had the aforementioned penalty shot goal. Less than a minute later, it was Pinto with a shorthanded goal, assisted by Norris. In overtime, both players battled hard on the boards and assisted on the Chabot game-winner. Norris finished the night with a goal and two assists while Pinto went for a goal and an assist of his own. It’s the two-way play that’s become noticeable for both of these guys. They’re both excelling at both ends of the rink while being asked to play in all situations.

Additional Notes

It was nice to see David Perron record his first point as a Senator. It took 51 games, 13 that he’s played in, but he finally got on the score sheet with a nice pass on the Ridly Greig goal. Anton Forsberg’s been solid with Ullmark out, but his glove was weak tonight. Nonetheless, he did enough over these last few weeks to keep his backup job with Ullmark coming back soon. Leevi Merilainen will likely head back to Belleville, but I wonder what will happen with Nikolas Matinpalo once the defense is healthy. He’s been very solid in his 14 games in Ottawa this season. The team has gone 9-3-2 in those games. Speaking of defense, Chabot and Sanderson both came up big tonight. A goal from both guys is important for a team that hasn’t seen a lot of d-men goals this season.
